DSMM Mentors of Prospective Participants

The Duke Scholars in Molecular Medicine Program is a nine month program (September to May) which allows pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral associates in basic science to have hands-on experiences in clinical areas related to their field of research.  Each participant will be in one of four tracks:

  • Duke Scholars in Infectious Diseases (DSID)

  • Duke Scholars in Neurosciences (DSNS)

  • Duke Scholars in Oncology and Regenerative Medicine (DSOR)

  • Duke Scholars in Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Disease (DSEC)

In each track, the participants will have a range of experiences including clinical exposure in clinics and the hospital, clinical conference and journal clubs; and a special guest speaker series in which the groups will discuss bench-to-bedside science and career development. Through these experiences, we aim to give the trainees a first hand view of clinical studies daily in our basic research laboratories and open their minds to the myriad of unmet clinical problems that they may some day chose to address through basic and translational research.

The intent of the program is to enhance the training experience of our most talented graduate students and postdoctoral fellows without detracting from their major endeavors in the laboratory. The program commitments will therefore be time focused but hopefully, rich in experience. Our hope is that this program will also build important translational bridges between the basic science laboratories and clinical programs. I think you will agree that the common goal of educating our trainees is an outstanding way of building such connections.

Please find in this website a brief overview of the program and the commitment involved with participation.

The application process is described on the website. The application period for 2022-2023 is now open. As part of the application, we request a brief letter from each applicant’s research mentor to ensure that you agree that your student or postdoctoral associate is an appropriate candidate to participate. We hope that you will encourage your talented and motivated trainees to apply to the program. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions regarding the program.
