Gina-Maria Pomann is Statistical Research Scientist and the Director of the Duke Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) Methods Core. The mission of the Core is to work with the interdisciplinary network of clinical investigators conducting research at Duke by providing expertise in study design, implementation of statistical methodology, and interpretation of results.

One of the primary goals was to build the infrastructure necessary to develop a comprehensive biostatistics collaborative unit for the school of medicine at Duke. To do this, the Core developed collaborative models specifically tailored to different medical research units across the school of medicine and hired staff necessary to meet the evolving collaborative needs. The Core has grown from 6 staff biostatisticians to 18 staff biostatisticians and a large group of Master’s student interns who work on interdisciplinary teams, led by quantitative faculty, to conduct research throughout the school of medicine.

The Core also serves as the primary coordinating center to connect investigators with the appropriate methodologists/quantitative experts to foster and promote reproducible research in an effort-based collaborative model. The Core has developed medical investigator training programs, biostatistician staff training programs, a biostatistics training and internship program, a seminar series, and facilitated the developed over 40 collaborative teams that work across the university. Gina-Maria's primary research interests are in experimental design, image analysis, functional data, case-control sampling, observational data, statistical education, integration of quantitative experts in academic health centers, and promoting diversity.
