The Duke site of the National Clinician Scholars Program (NCSP) welcomes new faculty leadership as it enters its third year as part of this national consortium.
Dr. Naomi Duke is joining the NCSP as the School of Medicine Program Director and currently serves as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, as well as Lecturer of Sociology in the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences.
“I have benefited from many rich opportunities to engage in research, education, and mentoring,” said Duke, “and I hope to extend these skills to mentor and engage with NCSP scholars interested in supporting health equity through clinical practice and the advancement of policy-relevant research in population science, health services, and community engagement.”
In addition, current Duke NCSP faculty leaders will take on new roles. Dr. Devon Noonan will become the School of Nursing Program Director, taking over for Dr. Marion Broome, who will be retiring in June 2021. Dr. David Edelman assumed the role of VA Liaison and Program Director, replacing Dr. Gene Oddone, who retired in December 2020. Dr. Noonan has served on the Duke NCSP leadership team since the site’s inception in 2018, and Dr. Edelman has contributed expertise in both mentorship and the recruitment and selection of candidates since Duke joined the NCSP.
“Every day it is an honor and a privilege to work with the incredible NCSP leadership team and our extremely talented NCSP scholars,” said Noonan. “I look forward to taking on this new role and continuing the tradition of NCSP in training MD and RN scholars as change agents who produce rigorous, policy-relevant research and cultivate community partnerships to improve health and health care.”
“It is both an honor and a daunting task to assume the VA Liaison and Program Director role held by Dr. Oddone,” said Edelman. ”I’ve spent more than 18 years working with young scientists in Durham, and I am excited to use this platform to continue this work to accelerate and enhance the careers of scholars focused on improving health services research.”
Dr. Tolu Oyesanya will become the new School of Nursing Associate Program Director and is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and a member of the Healthcare in Adult Populations Division. Dr. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos, who was recently announced as the new Dean of the School of Nursing, beginning in July 2021, will also join the Duke NCSP Advisory Board and the NCSP National Program Board. Prior to being named Dean, Dr. Guilamo-Ramos served as a Consulting Professor in the School of Nursing.
Duke NCSP is an interdisciplinary, community-partnered research training program for physicians and nurses. The overarching goal of the program is to train inter-professional clinician scholars in data-driven inquiry, policy-impactful and rigorous investigation, sensitive community-based participatory research, and transformation of healthcare practice.
The national NCSP was founded in 2016 and currently has sites at Duke; Yale University; University of Pennsylvania; University of Michigan; University of California, Los Angeles; and University of California, San Francisco.
