From Ideas to Action: A Model for Engagement in Treatment of Rare Cancers

Anh N. Tran, PhD, associate professor in family medicine and community health, and Gayathri Devi, PhD, professor in surgery and pathology, took the first step in a research collaboration with a July 24 think tank facilitated by the CTSI Team Science Core. The event brought together a wide-ranging group of researchers, clinicians, trainees, and community health advocates to address approaches that combine laboratory discoveries with community-engaged strategies to improve awareness, diagnosis, and treatment of aggressive and rare cancers like inflammatory breast cancer.

Through lightning talks, small-group deep dives, and open dialogue, participants fostered trust, aligned priorities, and co-developed strategies that bridge scientific innovation with meaningful community engagement, Tran said.

The effort is funded by a Collaborative Research Planning Grant from Duke Office for Research Innovation. “This grant not only recognizes scientific excellence but also highlights the importance of trust, alignment, and authentic collaboration — offering a model we are excited to expand in future gatherings,” she said.
