Examples From the Field: Communities and Researchers Working Together to Address Birth Justice in North Carolina
According to the March of Dimes, North Carolina's infant mortality rate in 2021 was 6.7 per 1,000 live births, which is higher than the U.S. rate of 5.4. The infant mortality rate for Black birth people in North Carolina is 1.8 times the state rate. The state's maternal mortality rate in 2021 was 44 deaths per 100,000 births, which is higher than the U.S. average of 32 per 100,000. This educational session addresses community engaged researchers and collaborating community based organizations working together to address this community problem. -
Examples From the Field Part 2: VOICES of Change for Health Equity- Nursing Researchers and Communities Addressing Maternal Child Health in North Carolina
A team of nursing researchers developed a doula training program to help families and close the maternal mortality gap. The program's doulas support families during labor, educate them about their bodies and rights, and serve a advocates. This presentation shares the engagement strategies between community women that became trained doulas through several cohorts and the positive impact it made on birth outcomes. -
