Duke Center for Health Informatics: Leveraging Secondary Sources and Data Science to Address Equity In Care In Low Resourced Settings: Study Case In the Amazon Forest

Seminar Abstract: Brazil is a continental middle income country, with disproportionate income distribution leading to very rich and very poor areas within the same national borders. Addressing equity in care is one of the values of the Brazilian national health care system (Sistema Unico de Saúde - SUS) - one of the largest public healthcare systems in the world with a focus on primary care. The SUS Family Health Strategy covers about 90% of the municipalities, 70% of the population, reaching most remote areas including the Amazon region. Our approach leverages Brazil's existing large and highly penetrated healthcare information systems to analyze care disparities, policy impact and develop data-driven solutions to improve equity and access to care. Biosketch: Dr. Vissoci is an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine, Global Health and Neurosurgery at Duke University. He is currently the director of the Global Emergency Medicine Innovation and Implementation (GEMINI) Research Center, and a member of the Research Design and Analysis Core (RDAC). He works primarily with leveraging secondary data to address equity and timely access to care in low resourced settings. His work currently focused on the US, Brazil, and Tanzania and is interested in data-driven innovation and translational science and implementation for data science.
