During the second training offered in 2025 to the Duke research community, the CTSI Center for Equity in Research will host a transformative, virtual workshop focused on the core principles of gender equity in research. The workshop offers a variety of continuing education credit.
“Participants will explore the profound impact of a diverse participant pool, emphasizing the significance of LGBTQIA+ representation in research,” said Dane Whicker, PhD, co-director for the center. “Additionally, we will discuss recent legislative impacts on clinical research and the importance of Codes of Conduct in protecting participants.”
This workshop — set for noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19 on Zoom — will be presented by Whicker and Keisha Bentley-Edwards, PhD, co-director for the center.

Attendees will examine best practices for inclusively collecting sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data, using accurate and respectful language in study protocols and participant materials, and increasing the representation of LGBTQIA+ individuals in research.
Key topics will also include the importance of distinguishing between sex, gender, and sexual orientation to create a diverse and inclusive participant pool. Attendees will learn about the value this diversity brings to research rigor and generalizability, as well as ethical considerations of using sex or gender as inclusion/exclusion criteria and learn strategies for mitigating potential harms, such as misgendering or deadnaming.
The event is ideal for faculty, research staff, trainees, students, and community researchers who seek to develop more equitable research. The 5Ws Framework will also be introduced and applied to gender equity in research.
