Virtual Workshop to Focus on Vital Role of Racial Equity in Research

The CTSI Center for Equity in Research invites the Duke research community to an enlightening, virtual workshop that will delve deep into the heart of racial equity and its vital connection to the research landscape. The workshop offers a variety of continuing education credit.

“Through this workshop, participants will be better equipped with actionable strategies to actively advance racial equity,” said Keisha Bentley-Edwards, PhD, co-director for the center. “By the end of the session, they will have a deeper understanding of how to incorporate a racial equity lens into their research and will have learned practical steps to implement these principles in their work.”

The workshop, “Incorporating a Racial Equity Lens through 5Ws Framework in Research,” will be held on Zoom from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. Bentley-Edwards will lead the workshop with Dane Whicker, PhD, co-director for the center.

The event is ideal for faculty, research staff, trainees, students, and community researchers who want to develop more equitable research practices. The workshop will explore the complex roles of race, racism, anti-racism, and racial equity within research and examine systemic barriers through real-world examples and historical contexts.

Participants will also learn strategies for embedding equity in their projects and research settings when they consider key questions such as who is included, what resources are allocated, when research activities occur, where research is conducted, and why certain approaches are chosen.

The 5Ws of Racial Equity in Research: A Framework for Applying a Racial Equity Lens Throughout the Research Process is recommended reading to prepare for the workshop.
